UST and UMAIE Sponsored Programs
Priority Enrollment
The priority enrollment period is from April 2 to 11 for all UST and UMAIE-Sponsored programs. Students who wish their applications to be considered for priority enrollment must apply by midnight of the priority appliation deadline. Applications will be accepted after the priority deadline for programs on a space available basis.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Through Sep. 16, 2013...................... Refund of $500 deposit
Sep. 17 – Oct. 1, 2013........................No refund; loss of $500 deposit
Oct 1 - Nov 26, 2013...........................No refund guaranteed; 100% of program costs will be charged to your
student account, $500 deposit applies as credit. Any recoverable costs
returned following end of program.
Nov 26, 2013 - Program Start Date......NO REFUNDS

Co-Sponsored Programs
Students who wish to apply for a co-sponsored program (i.e. through a third party provider; AIFS, IES, etc.) must complete both a UST Study Abroad and a program provider application. In order to begin the application process students must attend an advising session at the International Education Center.
The priority applicaiton period does not apply to co-sponsored programs, and students are not required to submit a deposit to UST on application. Deposits are paid directly to the program provider.

Selection Criteria for Short-Term January Programs
UST-Sponsored Programs * 4 credits unless otherwise noted.
Qualified aplicants (see Short-Term Policies & Procedures) will be selected on the basis of:
- Academic preparation and strength;
- Sense of maturity, responsibility and citizenship;
- Identification of carefully-defined academic and personal goals and objectives for studying off-campus with their proposed program and location;
- Ability to describe how the off-campus experience will apply to their academic and personal goals and;
- Knowledge of the host country and culture of the course. Applicants should be prepared to address some basic factual information from both historical and current perspectives.
- There may be additional criteria used by the faculty director. Check the full-page course description or check with them.
UMAIE-Sponsored Programs * 4 credits unless otherwise noted. For more information about UMAIE, please visit www.umaie.org.
- Selection courses: Qualified applicants (see Short-Term Policies & Procedures) will be selected on the basis of their previous coursework, G.P.A., and written essay. Individual programs may require an interview.
- Non-selection courses (seniority): Qualified applicants (see Short-Term Policies & Procedures) will be selected on the basis of class rank (determined by the Regisrar's Office). After the priority enrollment deadline, April 5, qualified applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Enrollment Type
- Selection: Students applying for a course with selection enrollment will go through a specific selection process. Applications will be reviewed by the faculty director and in some cases applicants will be interviewed. See the selection criteria listed below.
- Seniority: For certain 300 and 400-level courses, students with junior or senior standing will have priority. Applicants will be given priority based on class rank information obtained from the Registrar. After the priority applicaiton deadline, enrollment will be first-come, first-served (non-selection) basis.
Explanation of Fees for Short-Term Programs
Program Fee
The Program Fee for January Short-Term Programs includes 4 credits of tuition, airfare, accommodation, some meals, ground transportation and excursions, unless otherwise noted on the individual course descriptions.
Off-Campus Study Fee
All students who study off-campus during any term will be charged a $250 Off-Campus Study Fee. The fee, along with the program fee, will be reflected on your student account prior to your program. This fee supports the administration on the University of St. Thomas campus of the program in which you will be participating off-campus.
UMAIE Fee
All students who study off-campus through a UMAIE program in either January or May/June will be charged both the Off-Campus Study Fee ($250) and the UMAIE Fee ($200). These fees will be itemized and reflected on your student account prior to your program and support the administration on the University of St. Thomas campus of UMAIE programs.

I can’t log in!
Log in to stthomas.edu/studyabroad using your UST username and password. If your UST username and password do not work, contact IRT for assistance with resetting your password (stthomas.edu/irt).
How much do programs cost?
Tentative costs, as available, are included in the budget sheet, found at the top of the program brochure. Costs will be finalized during the fall semester. Go to Search for a Program and, once you have located the program you are interested in, click the term next to the Budget Sheet tab.
Do I have to submit my application online?
Yes. Paper applications cannot be accepted.
Do I have to make a deposit now?
Yes, deposits are required at time of application for UST and UMAIE sponsored programs. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Do I have to make two deposits if I am applying for two programs?
No
Is my deposit refunded if I am not accepted?
Yes. Deposits are typically refunded to the bank account you have provided to the Business Office.
Can I apply for more than one program?
Yes. You may apply for a maximum of two programs. *NOTE* You may only apply to one UMAIE sponsored program.
Can a non-UST student apply?
Yes. They need to e-mail studyabroad@stthomas.edu for instructions. For UMAIE programs they must apply through the program directors’ school (i.e. for a course led by Augustana directors, the non-UST student would need to apply through Augustana).
How do directors decide which students are accepted?
Program directors look at all aspects of a student’s application: essay, academic history, GPA. Students are especially encouraged to write a thoughtful essay, although this is not the only factor in application decisions. Review the Selection for Criteria above for more information.
How do I know which programs are full?
In early May a list of full and waitlisted programs will be posted at stthomas.edu/studyabroad > Apply for a Program > January Term
Cancellation

How do I cancel my application?
Cancellations MUST be sent from your UST account to studyabroad@stthomas.edu.
I'm approved for a co-sponsored program, how do I cancel?
Students on co-sponsored programs must cancel with both UST and their program provider. They must be aware of their program’s cancellation policy.
Waitlist
Should I cancel from the waitlist so I know I'll get my deposit back?
The cancellation policy does not apply to students on the waitlist. However, if a spot opens in a course students will automatically be moved in and the cancellation policy immediately applies.
What if the cancellation deadline has passed?
If space should open in a course after the first cancellation deadline, Study Abroad will confirm the next student on the waitlist wishes to accept the spot. If the spot is accepted the cancellation policy immediately applies. If the spot is not accepted the student's application will be cancelled and deposit refunded.
When will I know if a spot will open?
Unfortunately it is not possible to predict whether or not any accepted students will cancel and therefore open a space in a course. Study Abroad will keep students on the waitlist through the end of November. If no spaces open waitlist applications will be cancelled and deposits refunded.
