International Faculty Development Grant

The International Education Center will make three grants of up to $3,500 available to attend an International Faculty Development Seminar sponsored by the Council of International Educational Exchange (CIEE). CIEE seminars are being offered in approximately 20 countries for the summer of 2012.  Please visit www.ciee.org/ifds for specific sites, dates, and details on the seminars.  Each seminar lasts one to two weeks, focuses on topics of current interest, and is sponsored in cooperation with local universities and educational institutions.

Objective

The purpose of this grant is to assist faculty in gaining international experience in order to internationalize their teaching and/or research and to explore opportunities for international programming.

Eligibility

  1. All full-time UST clinical, tenured, or tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply.
  2. Faculty who have received a this award in the preceding fiscal year may not apply during the current fiscal year.
  3. Proposals must be submitted by the application deadline (Friday, January 13, 2012) to be considered.  The CIEE program application deadline is March 1, 2012.  For CIEE seminar application, see www.ciee.org/ifds.
  4. Travel must be completed during the current (2012) budgetary year.

Procedures

  1. A completed grant proposal consists of the following:
    1. A proposal narrative (3 pages maximum) that addresses each of the following:
      • Overview (brief statement that describes the CIEE Seminar you plan to apply for and what you intend to accomplish);
      • Outcome (how the proposed program will impact your teaching and/or research and student learning);
      • Experience (what previous experience, if any, you have in the location/s you plan to visit); and
      • Budget (list of estimated expenses, plus any other funding you will use to support your travel).
    2. A copy of your curriculum vitae.
    3. A letter of support from your department chair.
  2. Submit your completed grant proposal documents to Mary Hernández in the International Education Center (mail #44C or mehernandez@stthomas.edu) by Friday, January 13, 2012.
  3. Within one semester of the travel, grantees will submit to the Director of International Programs a written report outlining how the seminar was used to internationalize their teaching and/or research and to explore opportunities for international programming.

Selection Criteria

  1. Completed applications will be reviewed and selection by the Faculty Advisory Committee for International Education. Award notifications will be made no later than Friday, January 20, 2012.
  2. Selection will be made on the strength of the proposal and its anticipated outcomes.
  3. Preference will be given to proposals from faculty who have not had extensive international experience and to faculty who have not previously received grants from International Education.
  4. Grants are not available for travel to conferences.
